REDUCING POLLUTION IN THE PHILIPPINES

In 2008 American Tim Bauer received the prestigious Rolex Award for his efforts to reduce the air pollution that envelopes major cities in the Philippines as well as in other Asian countries. Mr. Bauer set up shop in Vigan, Ilocos Sur to develop and market a kit that reduces the particulate emissions of two-stroke tricycle engines by roughly 70 percent; carbon monoxide (CO) emissions by 76 per cent; hydrocarbons emissions by 89 per cent; and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 35 per cent.

Anyone familiar with the Philippines knows about the huge pollution problem. Tricycles and jeepneys are the prominent source of transportation and yet they both are a disgrace for the massive amounts of pollution they emit and it seems like NOTHING has been done about it for years and years. Then along comes an American who invents a kit that is used to refit tricycles and the results are dramatic. Good for him and it's good for the Philippines. One question - why did it take a foreigner to do something about the pollution problem in the Philippines? Why does it seem the government could care less? Sorry, that's two questions. Here's the story.

true Deb, somehow the air pollution has been so long existent in our country, i think why it took years for someone to find something to help minimize pollution without changing our main mode of transporation and someone who is a foreigner because for some reasons, our country does not encourage so much innovation, we are putting so much emphasis and pride on exporting labor, not technology and goods to keep labor and workforce within the country.

He truly deserved this award. I was in Philippines for about 1.5 years back in 2003-2005 too. It was really sad to see that not only the pollution was bad but there were a lot of illnesses caused by the bad pollution too. I truly hope that the pollution issue will get better. In fact with kit that Tim Bauer has, possibly the government could play a big part to support it too.

Sorry, I deleted my comment. I realized it will only add harm to the country.

I'll just pray for a better Phils.

Ay naku...it's a pity to say the least that it's taking a foreigner to solve this pollution problem. I'm sure we have kababayans who could have done the same. Oh well..

Hopping by here for a quick visit! How's your week so far?

That is great that pollution is being reduced in the Philippines now! I hope eventually there will be no pollution anywhere!

Thank you for the comments on my blog yesterday! I'm glad that your son didn't have any problems when starting cow's milk. That was so cute what Daniel said when you were looking at Logan's pictures :) It sounds like our boys have a lot in common! Do you know what baby #2 is?

I appreciated the nice words about Bella & Cosmo, too! Thankfully there haven't been any incidences since so I really hope that was a one time thing!!!

Hope you have an excellent day!
