John Esposito is a name you may or may not be familiar with. But the company he operates as Chief Executive Officer you are probably very familiar with. WEA which stands for Warner, Elektra and Atlantic. Three very famous much brands which span over many, many years of music making. Mr. Esposito is interviewed in the above video about the music industry. He is quizzed about musical talent and the chances of being discovered and signed in this day and age. His answers are very intriguing and I am sure they would be very interesting to many who are looking at making music more than just a past time.
The interview includes the following topics:
- How hard is it for an Artist to get signed in today's music industry?
He comments that the music industry has the traditional major labels in which it is extremely difficult to be signed but there are independent labels that are not easy to be signed to, but easier than the major labels. Then, of course, there is the internet where anyone can go online and post a music video. - Are the labels taking more risk or less risk because of the challenges?
The answer is a little of each in my opinion. There is more risk because the market is saturated with music and musical stars and the person needs to have that "x" factor that makes him/her stand out. But there is less risk in the fact that not as much needs to be invested to "test the waters" of popularity (ie. the interent). - How is today's A&R model changing? What are the labels looking for? The labels are looking for talent that stands out amoung the rest. They are looking for individuals or groups that offer the "wow".
- Can you explain what a 360 deal is? How it works? What's involved? Is it a factor in signing? I'll let you listen to Mr. Esposito's answer to this one.
I would recommend listening and watching the above video - yu can even click on the above link. John Esposito is a leader in the music industry and has a lot of wisdom to offer anyone interested in music and a music career.
